Training In Self Advocacy Skills

The course aims to equip participants with an understanding of self advocacy and related issues. Throughout the training, participants will be presented with and given the opportunity to explore and discuss the issues around advocacy. They will also be encouraged throughout the programme, to identify and talk about their own feelings with regards the topic at hand.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To equip participants with a basic understanding of advocacy
  2. To give participants an awareness of different types of advocacy
  3. To develop listening / questioning skills of trainees
  4. To develop participants’ understanding of the importance of assertive behaviour for clear and effective communication
  5. To recognise the need for and benefits of advocacy
  6. To develop the participants’ confidence
  7. To develop participants understanding of empowerment
  8. To equip participants with an ability to handle conflict effectively and positively
  9. To increase the individuals interpersonal skills
  10. To develop the individuals communication skills
  11. To develop an understanding of non-verbal communication.

The sessions run for a total of 21 hours and can be delivered in half days or full days. The course is participative and practical including real life scenarios. Participants will be expected to engage in role-play, small and whole group exercises and discussions. Handouts will be available.
