Training In Basic Advocacy Skills

The course aims to equip participants with an understanding of advocacy and related issues. Throughout the training, trainees will be presented with and given the opportunity to explore and discuss the issues around the topic. They will also be encouraged throughout the programme to identify and talk about their own feelings with regards to the topic at hand.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To equip trainees with a basic understanding of advocacy and related issues
  2. To develop listening / questioning skills
  3. To recognise the need for and benefits of advocacy for different people at different times in their lives
  4. To develop trainees’ understanding of empowerment
  5. To develop trainees’ assertiveness skills

Training sessions available:

  1. An introduction to advocacy
  2. An advocacy relationship
  3. Empowerment
  4. Listening skills
  5. Communication skills
  6. Disability awareness

The sessions run for a total of 21 hours and can be delivered in half days or full days. The course is participative and practical including real life scenarios. Participants will be expected to engage in role-play, small and whole group exercises and discussions. Handouts will be available.
